Comic Gene Series Trial: “Servamp” Chapter 1

This is a trial of the series “Servamp” from Comic Gene.  I’m feeling very ambivalent about bringing yet another vampire series into English, so I’m very eager to read your opinions about the first chapter of this series.  As for my personal feelings about this series, I could take it or leave it and, therefore, I want to try out some of the other Comic Gene series before committing to this one.  I’m also very open to not doing this series so another group who’s more enthusiastic about it can do it.  Anyhow, for now, I will translate the second chapter to see what happens next, but I will not be committing any resources for a release until I’m sure I want to do this series.  In the meantime, we’ll give “Antimagia” a whirl and then take a vote ;p.

  1. As far as being a vampire series, I don’t know how I feel about this one yet, but I am looking forward to the next chapter to see how it goes. It does have action to it, so that is a bonus. Thanks for the hard work on this.

  2. I’m not sure about the direction of story, but Mahiru’s and Kuro’s characters are quite – no, very good.
What a lazy vampire Kuro is, kekekekeke.
Mahiru is finally a character that isn’t a wimp despite his past and seems to be able to do anything. I like that a lot! ^^

I want to read some more of this. I wonder what kind of development will be there.
So far its a cliffhanger. I want to know what’s going to happen with their contract.

  3. It looks pretty interesting, and I really like both Kuro and Mahiro’s characters too. Really looking forward to ch2!

  4. Mahiru is quite the lovable character. His aspect on indecision is kind of refreshing and admirable too. (Almost to the point of egotism, but not really xD)

Not too hot on the lazy vampire though. But he does make a contrast to outgoing Mahiru.

  5. Yay! It’s out!

This chapter looked pretty cool! The art’s great. I really like the slothful-vampire-cat. It’s also interesting that Mahiru does everything himself, not just because he’s talented, but because he thinks it’s a pain to work with other people. (Arrogant fellow! He must be brought down a few notches! Ahm, ahm…)

Thanks for this offering. You say you’re not too stoked about it….but I’d like to see a little more…

  6. Well, I really liked the chapter! It was just tooooo hilarious xD
A vampire eating instant soup… and that nya of the final! xDD And the art it’s just fantastic!
For the moment, I liked more this chapter that the one of Rex Fabula (that one was stunning, but the lake of sense make that the series didn’t catch my attention like servamp) Maybe I will change my mind after reading chapter 2 of Rex, but for the time being I enjoyed more Servamp~

  7. Thanks so much for this release! It looked like an incredible pain to redraw and typeset D: Wonderful work was done on it, though (:

    Now for first impressions:~

Personally speaking, the vampire aspect isn’t that appealing to me, but since this manga is also action, I guess it’s okay. The art is decent, but I think there’s too much text cramped in each panel. It’s tiring to read and diverts your attention away from the story itself. Also, there’s something wrong with the pacing — see how quickly that magician/vampire crazy person appeared and attacked. I don’t like that sort of handling.

However, the characters are interesting. You immediately take a liking to both Mahiru and Kuro, and also Mahiru’s friends. I think when we delve further into Kuro’s character, his past, his acquaintances, etc., that’s where this story will really shine (just my opinion, though). The “seven” brothers thing has already made me very curious. Their interactions are also cute and very humorous, hehe.

I agree with your decision to keep this series a trial. Unlike Rex Fabula, which made a really sharp first impact, Servamp doesn’t have that…epic arrival feeling. I will, however, be keeping an eye out for this series.

    Thanks again for this release!

  8. Like it a lot. I’ve been following this artist for ages and I’ve been wating for this for three weeks. Thank u.

  9. Alright then. It has nice, clean art (which is always a plus in my book), a likable main character (as I said, I could come to like Shirota a lot), an interesting plot (not the whole vampire thing, but the other thing), and…er, well, I forgot my train of thought, so yeah. Moving on.

I don’t like the “I could die” line by Kuro. The first two times, it was fine, but after that.. it got old.. fast. Then the random moments (as you know) I didn’t like either. So, that’s my opinion..lol.

I wonder what Antimagia is about. Magic I hope *laughs*

Oh, oh, oh! I just realized something. Kuro says, “Don’t say my name or..” and Shirota calls his name and the contract begins. Now, crazy praying mantis vampire dude, said that Kuro’s name was/is Sleepy Ash… so, how did Shirota and “Kuro” form a contract when his real name wasn’t used..? Confusing for me there.

*blushes* By complete chance I saw my name on the credits list..lol. Was not expecting that.

  10. Thank you for Servamp. I was incredibly interested after reading the preview. This looks like a fun series. 🙂

Again, thank you for all the hard work!
